Updated: 5 days ago

Jamaica - The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has generously donated six state-of-the-art anesthesia machines and patient monitors to hospitals across Jamaica, marking a significant stride towards enhancing surgical capabilities in the region.  PAHO worked closely with Jamaica’s Ministry of Health and Andar International, a medical equipment company in the Caribbean, to purchase and install the 6 machines.

This project underscores PAHO’s longstanding collaboration with Jamaica in addressing healthcare needs and promoting health equity across the region. The machines are manufactured by Penlon, a medical device company known for their advanced technology and reliability. These crucial pieces of medical equipment will bolster surgical capacities in Jamaican hospitals.

Each machine is equipped with a Nihon Kohden Patient Monitor to measure patient vitals and end-tidal CO2.  These monitors are designed to exceed international standards for patient care with Integrated touchscreens, multiple ventilation modes, and modern intuitive user interfaces.  These advanced capabilities assist healthcare providers in ensuring safer and more efficient anaesthesia delivery during surgical procedures.

The 6 anaesthesia machines were distributed to 5 hospitals in Jamaica, Kieran Casey of Andar International who provided 5 days of training to anaesthesilogists and surgical staff at each hospital.  As exclusive distribuotrs of Penlon and Nihon Kohden, Andar International provides on-going services and suppport for the hospital staff and maintenance for the machines.

Andar was selected by PAHO for this project for their longstanding commitment in the Caribbean, strong distribution channel of high-quality medical equipment for hospitals and surgical centers, their reliable support and maintenance of the equipment.

PAHO is the specialized health agency of the Inter-American System and also serves as Regional Office for the World Health Organization (WHO), the specialized health agency of the United Nations.  The distribution of these anaesthesia machines aligns with PAHO's broader mission to improve health outcomes and resilience in the face of health challenges.
